The Laramie Project by Moisés Kaufman and members of the Tectonic Theater Project
On the first day of rehearsal, after giving the actors the entire summer to study and research the play and subject matter, I asked the cast to write down what they thought The Laramie Project was.
Ariel: The Laramie Project is the exploration of human nature.
Nick: It is Human. It is as human as you and me.
Joel: Poetry in motion.
Josiah: It explores…it reflects…it illuminates…
Drew: This is not just a play I am involved in.
Whitney: The world we live in is one of labels and over-generalizations….
Ariel: Looking back on my answer I think it is a cop out.
Bethany: The Laramie Project is misunderstood.
Melissa: It’s hard to define.
Jennifer: It is potentially my worst nightmare.
Elizabeth: I’ve been told that I was going to hell before and I can’t imagine…
Julie: I don’t even, I can’t, I just feel so many things while reading this play that I can’t encapsulate a description on this stupid piece of paper.
Sam V: The twists and turns of a few people’s actions
Taylor: It is how we reacted to that violence. How we, for a tiny moment, saw the best and worst in the same breath.
Kimberly: An attempt to navigate the confusing, observe the controversial.
Whitney Ice: In 2010, fourteen Missouri State University Students began researching The Laramie Project. 14 students discovered the best and worst parts of humanity. 14 students will now share that information with you.
