STACY PARKER JOYCE

Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde adapted by Jeffrey Hatcher
at Indiana University- South Bend

The ongoing joke in this rehearsal process has been that this is a play about a door. "Where is the door?" "Who moves the door?" I have seriously never said the word "door" more in my life.  I keep threatening to give the door its own curtain call.

However, this bit is funny because it's true. "You find an open door." says Dr. Jekyll. "...and once you've crossed its threshold, you will discover not one mind, but two."  Obviously Jekyll is describing his experiments with Mr. Hyde, BUT I was struck that this description can also describe what we do in the Theatre. A play can be an open door. And, hopefully, the audience (and cast and crew) crosses the metaphorical threshold into discovering a point of view that may be different than their own. We (safely) discover the darkness of human nature. We may even discover, like Utterson does, that "there's no one who is wholly good or wholly bad". The theater is a place where we can explore the duality of human nature and the part of the mind where our "deepest dreams and desires live". Instead of doing it alone in a laboratory, afraid and ashamed, we can share the experience with others. In my opinion, there are few things better for the soul than sitting in the dark with other humans laughing together, crying together, fearing together, and feeling together.

I hope you enjoy the show.
